PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team turned in a dominant performance Tuesday night, blanking Prairie View A&M in both games of a doubleheader to collect its second consecutive twin-bill sweep. The Ladyjacks held the Panthers to a combined total of four hits in the two games and shortened each contest with run-rule victories.
SFA took an 8-0 win in six innings in Game 1, outhitting the Panthers, 11-3, along the way. Freshman pitcher Monika Covington (2-0) started and worked all six innings, recording four strikeouts with two walks.
Four Ladyjacks posted multiple hits, led by freshman Ashley Struchtemeyer, who went 3-for-4 with her second home run of the season and scored twice. Classmate Monica Hirsch was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Sophomore Kendal Harper went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored, senior Jessica Tullos was 2-for-4 with a double and a run driven in, and juniors Kim Daley and Moriah Davis each hit safely once.
SFA was even more dominant in the nightcap. With freshman Lauren Luetge (1-0) twirling a five-inning, one-hit gem, the Ladyjacks pounded out 11 more hits and reached double figures in the runs column for the second time in three games. Luetge recorded nine strikeouts along the way.
Sophomore Briana Bishop provided some clout with her second-inning home run that accounted for two of her three RBI in the game. Harper went 3-for-3 with a double, three stolen bases and three runs scored. Junior Benet Higgs joined Hirsch and Tullos with two hits apiece. Higgs also drove in two runs, while Tullos pushed one across.
The Ladyjacks are now a perfect 4-0 on the season. SFA will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 20, when the Ladyjacks travel to College Station to take on Texas A&M in a doubleheader.
