FRSICO, Texas - Sophomore linebacker Jabara Williams has been named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week announced by league officials on Monday. It is the second time this season Williams has earned the honor.
Williams, a 6-3, 215-pound Garrison, native, recorded a game-high 17 tackles in SFA's 50-39 victory at Nicholls State on Saturday. The Lumberjacks had to claw back from 19-0 and 29-14 deficits in the first half, but the sophomore linebacker had seven solo tackles and assisted in 10 more as he helped the SFA defense hold the Colonels to only 10 points in second half. He also forced a fumble on the Colonels final possession of the game.
Williams previously had a 19-tackle performance Sept. 27 vs. South Dakota State and earned conference player of the week honors for that effort as well. Those are the top two tackle totals in the Southland this season. He currently leads the Southland with an average of 10.4 tackles per game and has also picked off three passes this season from his linebacker spot, which currently is tied for tops in the league as well.
SFA currently is riding a three-game win streak and sits tied atop the Southland Conference at 2-0. The Lumberjacks are back in action on Saturday at home against Texas State with a 2 o'clock kickoff slated against the Bobcats on homecoming weekend at SFA.
