AUSTIN, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team finished eighth overall at the Texas Cup Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon at the University of Texas Golf Club. The Lumberjacks improved upon their opening day score by six strokes to finish with a +40, 608.
Freshman Michael Smith paced the Lumberjack attack with a six-over par 148. After shooting a five-over 76 yesterday, Smith rebounded to shot a one-over 72 Tuesday afternoon. Classmate Justin Weant finished three strokes back of Smith, with a nine-over 151. He finished tied for 21st overall.
Sophomore Richard Wilkenfeld struggled on the final day of competition, falling on his opening-day pace by six strokes. Wilkenfeld finished tied for 27th overall with a two-day score of 152.
Freshman Kyle Robbins finished the tournament two strokes back of Wilkenfeld. Robbins shot a 154 to finish tied for 34th overall. Sophomore Matthew Oates improved his opening-round score by six strokes to finish tied with Robbins.
Freshman Jacob Taylor rounded out the scoring for SFA, improving by one stroke from Monday's competition. Taylor finished the tournament tied for 49th overall with a 161.
The Lumberjacks will return to action Monday, Oct. 1, when they travel to Arlington, Texas, to compete in the Waterchase Invitational.
