AUSTIN, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team is currently eighth overall at the Texas Intercollegiate Cup after the first day of competition Monday. The youthful Lumberjack squad shot a 307 on the first day, and is only 11 strokes back of first-place Texas-Arlington (296).
The Lumberjacks are paced by sophomore Richard Wilkenfeld who shot an opening-day score of 73, to finish fourth overall. Freshman Justin Weant is currently three strokes over par, with an opening day score of 74. Weant is currently in a five-way tie for 10th place.
Freshman Michael Smith shot an opening round 76 Monday and is currently 24th overall. Classmate Kyle Robbins is currently two strokes back of Smith, and enters Tuesday's final round of competition tied for 32nd. Sophomore Matthew Oates is tied for 43rd after shooting a nine-over par 80 during the first day of competition. Freshman Jacob Taylor rounds out the Lumberjacks' lineup with a 10-over par 81. Taylor is tied for 47th overall heading into the final day of competition.
The Lumberjacks return to action Tuesday morning to close out the Texas Intercollegiate Cup. SFA will tee off at 8 a.m. from the University of Texas Golf Club.
