NACOGDOCHES - Despite the fact that players don't report to campus for 24 hours, Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack fans received a kick-start to the 2007 season with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the SFA Athletic Fieldhouse Thursday afternoon. University President Dr. Baker Pattillo, Director of Athletics Robert Hill and first-year head coach J.C. Harper participated in the ribbon cutting festivities to officially open the newly renovated locker room.
"The locker room renovation exemplifies our commitment to winning championships in football," said Hill. "The commitment to winning began with Dr. Pattillo. We believe this will be a boost to our current players, as well as in recruiting."
Coaches, players and SFA fans showed up at 3:30 p.m. just outside the locker room to get their first look at the newly renovated facility. The project began shortly after the 2006 season-finale victory over Northwestern State, and was completed in time for the team, which reports for preseason camp Friday at 10 a.m.
The 'Jacks will hit the field for the first of 29 practice dates beginning Saturday with a conditioning workout. SFA will take part in three planned scrimmages. The dates for the three scrimmages are Saturday, Aug. 11, Saturday, Aug. 18 and Wednesday, Aug. 22.
SFA kicks off the 2007 season Saturday, Sept. 1, when it hosts Tarleton State. The game against the Texans is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium and is one of five scheduled home contests this season.
