NACOGDOCHES - Brad Laird has been hired to coach the Lumberjack linebackers Stephen F. Austin head football coach J.C. Harper announced Tuesday afternoon. Laird comes to Nacogdoches after a three-year stint at Northwestern State where he served as an assistant head coach and defensive coordinator.
"Brad brings a ton of coaching experience after serving as the defensive coordinator at Northwestern State," said Harper. "He has a vast knowledge of the state of Texas after coaching at Longview. He already has a great relationship with Coach (Darren) Drago and both have similar philosophies when it comes to handling the defense. Brad is also a great family man, which is very important to me."
During his time in Natchitoches, La., Laird's defensive units were among the best in the SLC. The Demons led the conference in back-to-back seasons in both total defense and rush defense. Both squads ranked among the nation's top 10 in both statistical categories.
Laird's guidance on the field has also produced individual honors for several of his athletes. He has coached the 2003 SLC Newcomer of the Year, 2004 SLC Defensive Player of the Year, four All-Americans and numerous all-conference selections.
A four-year letterwinner at Northwestern State, Laird earned All-SLC honors in 1994 and 1995. Laird concluded his athletic career as the school's all-time leader in passing yards, completions and pass attempts.
