DENTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team wrapped up its season Wednesday with a doubleheader at North Texas. The Ladyjacks were defeated, 5-3, in the opener, then dropped a 7-4 decision in the nightcap, as the game was called in the fifth inning due to inclement weather.
The two losses end SFA's season with a 19-37 season record. The Ladyjacks wrapped up Southland Conference play last week with a 12-18 league mark. Final SLC standings will be announced with the conclusion of the league schedule this weekend.
Wednesday, the Ladyjacks spotted North Texas a 3-0 lead in the first game. SFA rallied with a run in the third and two more in the fourth to tie the score, but the Mean Green put up a two spot in the fifth inning to take the win.
Centerfielder Benet Higgs and right fielder Kendal Harper collected two hits apiece, and pitcher Kari Hugie, third baseman Briana Bishop and second baseman Heather Hebert each had one base knock. Higgs, Bishop and Harper drove in a run apiece.
North Texas took a 3-0 lead after three innings in the second game, and SFA again tied the score in the fourth. First baseman Jessie Tullos drew a two-out walk, then Ashley Wilburn and Hebert each singled behind her to load the bases for shortstop Chelsea Carr, who doubled to center field, scoring all three runners.
But the Mean Green used four hits and two Ladyjack errors to score four runs in the bottom half and take a commanding 7-3 lead.
Higgs cut the lead to three runs when she scored from second on a Bishop double in the SFA fifth, but the Ladyjacks would get no closer, as the game was called on account of weather at that point.
Wilburn (9-14) pitched four innings in taking the loss. Five of her seven runs were earned, and she gave up eight base hits. Hugie (9-16) earned the decision in the opener. She started and pitched five innings with four earned runs on six hits.
