ARLINGTON, Texas - Steven Hill hit a two-run home run to left field in the top of the first inning to give Stephen F. Austin an early 2-0 lead against the Texas-Arlington Mavericks. But things did not go well for the Lumberjacks in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Mavericks rallied for six runs en route to an 8-4 win over SFA Saturday from Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington. The loss pushes the Lumberjacks' record to 27-24 overall and 14-12 in Southland Conference action. UTA improves to 13-35 on the season and 4-22 in league play.
After the Mavericks took a four-run lead in the bottom of the fourth, they added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-2 lead.
The Lumberjacks were finally able to take advantage in the top of the seventh as Jeff Brewer led off with a walk. He moved over when Justin Long hit a single and the bases were loaded when Hill drew a two-out walk. Chris Smith hit a shot to third base as UTA's Leo Radkowski booted the ball, allowing Brewer and Long to score and cut the lead to 8-4, the eventual final score.
Lumberjack starter Lance Luetge struggled in one of his shortest outings of the season, giving up five runs off eight hits in 3.1 innings of work. He gave up a walk and did not collect a strikeout as he fell to 7-4 on the year.
Long, Hill and Kevin Crabtree accounted for six of SFA's nine hits, as they collected two apiece. Smith, Croft and Ferguson each had one. Other than Hill's home run, the Lumberjacks did not record an extra-base hit on the night.
The Lumberjacks return to Clay Gould Ballpark Sunday at 1 p.m. to face the Mavericks in the rubber game of the series.
