
Demons Halt SFA's Win Streak

NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Northwestern State Demons forced the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks' five-game win streak to a halt as the Lumberjacks fell 6-2 in the first game of a three-game set in Natchitoches, La. SFA got on the board first, posting its two runs in the top of the second inning, but the Demons scored five runs in the next three innings before capping off with an extra run late in the game. The Lumberjacks now sit with a 17-15 overall record and are 5-5 in Southland Conference action as the Demons move to 14-17 overall and 4-5 in league play.
In the top of the second, cleanup hitter Chris Smith led off with a double to left center field and scored the Lumberjacks first run of the game on a single put through the left side from Jared Pitts. Pitts advanced to second on a Kevin Crabtree center field base hit. SFA got its second run when Pitts crossed the dish on a single through the left side hit by Jeff Brewer.
The Demons scored one run in the bottom of the third before scoring three in the fourth to take the 4-2 lead. Northwestern State put one more run up in the fifth inning before adding its final run in the bottom of the eighth.
Lumberjack starter Erich Lehmann pitched seven complete innings, allowing 11 hits and striking out seven. He suffered the loss to fall to 6-2 on the year. NSU's Jimmy Heard also pitched seven innings. Heard gave up seven runs and struck out 10 Lumberjacks. He won his fourth contest of the year.
At the plate, Kevin Crabtree was the only Lumberjack to post a multi-hit game with two hits. Smith, Pitts, Brewer, Kevin Croft, and Zach Gardner each posted a hit for SFA.
SFA will play Northwestern State in round two Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. from Brown-Stroud Field in Natchitoches, La.
