HUNTSVILLE, Texas - After taking an early lead, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team dropped a 4-2 decision at Sam Houston State Wednesday night.
The loss moved SFA to 19-30 on the season and 12-13 in Southland Conference play.
Third baseman Briana Bishop blasted a two-out home run in the top of the first to give the Ladyjacks a 1-0 edge. But Sam Houston State answered with two runs in the second and another in the third.
SFA cut the lead to one run in the sixth. Center fielder Benet Higgs drew a leadoff walk and the next batter, Crystal Garcia, beat out an infield single. First baseman Jessie Tullos then drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Second baseman Heather Hebert lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Higgs to make it a 3-2 game. But SFA could not push another run across, and Sam Houston stretched its advantage back to two runs with a solo homer in the bottom half.
The Ladyjacks went down in order in the seventh inning. Sophomore Kari Hugie (9-13) started and worked three innings in taking the loss. She was touched for three earned runs on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Freshman Magen Butler tossed the final three innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout.
The series will resume Thursday with a doubleheader in Huntsville, set for a 4:30 p.m. start.
