
Ladyjacks Leave San Marcos Victorious

SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks got 23 points and 13 rebounds from senior Evelyn Edwards to defeat Texas State, 73-70, Thursday night in San Marcos. The win improves SFA to 18-8 on the season, and 10-3 in Southland Conference play. More importantly, the Ladyjacks move to second in the SLC West Division.
The Bobcats scored the first eight points of the game, but the Ladyjacks responded by scoring the next four to cut the lead in half. The Ladyjacks trailed by eight points on one other occasion in the first half, but the Ladyjacks immediately battled right back.
SFA was able to claim a seven-point first-half lead behind hot shooting from beyond the arc. The Ladyjacks connected on 4-of-9 from beyond the arc in the opening half to take control of the game. Despite a late rally by the Bobcats, SFA took a two-point lead into the locker room, 31-29.
The Ladyjacks picked up the intensity offensively, building a 10-point second-half lead. SFA shot better than 50 percent for a majority of the half, and finished the half 13-for-27 (48 percent).
Senior Charity Egenti came to life in the second half scoring 18 of her 20 points in final 20 minutes of the game. She also added eight rebounds. Despite a couple of runs, the Ladyjacks never relinquished the lead in the second half.
The Ladyjacks shot 40 percent for the game, while holding Texas State to a 25-of-64 (39 percent) performance. SFA forced Texas State into 22 turnovers, but were outrebounded 46-38.
Freshman Whitney Cormier came off the bench to score 11 points and grab five rebounds. Junior Nikki Carr added five points.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday to host Texas-Arlington. The game against UTA is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
