RUSTON, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks mounted a three-run rally in the seventh inning of Game 2 Tuesday night, but came up one run short of preventing a double-header sweep at Louisiana Tech. The Lady Techsters held on to notch a 4-3 win in the nightcap, following their 3-0 win in the early game. The losses moved SFA to 3-4 on the season.
After being shut out through the first 13 innings, the Ladyjacks put together five hits in the top of the seventh to come within a run of tying the game. Kim Daley, Magen Butler and Benet Higgs started the inning off with three consecutive singles. Daley scored on Higgs' hit, but Higgs was thrown out trying to take second on the play. The next batter, Crystal Dahlquist, was hit by a pitch, then Jessica Tullos bunted for a single, bringing Butler across for the second run of the inning. After a Michelle Huffman strikeout, Tullos and Dahlquist advanced to second and third, respectively, on a wild pitch. Then Crystal Garcia singled to left field, bringing Dahlquist home and putting the tying run on third. But Tullos was stranded when Heather Hebert went down swinging to end the game.
In all, the Ladyjacks left nine runners on base in the game. Tullos went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead SFA at the plate. Higgs, Garcia, Daley, Kendal Harper and Butler each added a hit apiece. Kari Hugie started and went the distance for SFA in the circle. She gave up four earned runs on nine hits and a pair of walks.
Ashley Wilburn did the pitching in Game 1. She held Louisiana Tech to three runs on four hits and five walks in the complete-game loss. She got little help from the SFA bats. Harper's single in the sixth inning was the lone Ladyjack hit in the shutout.
SFA will have a week off before returning to action on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at Texas A&M. The Ladyjacks are slated for a doubleheader against the Aggies in College Station, starting at 2 p.m.
