Golf Sixth After First Day of Battle on the Bend

MANY, La. - After a one-hour delay due to fog, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team was finally able to tee off Sunday morning in the third annual Battle on the Bend golf tournament hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette. The Lumberjacks are currently sixth, of nine teams, after shooting a 20-over par 308 Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Matt Oates led the Lumberjacks by shooting a one-over 73 to place him in a four-way tie for 13th place. Freshman Michael Smith is currently two strokes back with a three-over 75, which places him tied for 20th overall. Classmate Jacob Taylor finished the first 18 holes with a six-over par 78. Taylor is currently tied for 29th overall.
Sophomore Richard Wilkenfeld and freshman Kyle Robbins struggled during the first 18 holes. Wilkenfeld (T42nd) shot an opening-round 82, while Robbins (T47th) shot an 83.
The Lumberjacks will look to climb in the standings Monday morning when they return to the course for the second round of action. The Battle on the Bend will conclude Tuesday morning with the final 18 holes.
