NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Home for Thanksgiving: The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team will kick off its brief Thanksgiving holiday by hosting Louisiana-Monroe Wednesday in a 7 p.m. game. The Lumberjacks are 2-1 on the season after suffering their first loss of the year in their road opener at Texas Tech Saturday. Louisiana-Monroe is 1-2 on the year with the losses coming at the hands of some tough opposition.
Last Game: The Lumberjacks committed a season-high 23 turnovers in falling at Texas Tech, 60-44. After going to halftime down, 27-18, SFA went on an 11-2 run to open the second half and tied the score at 29 with 14:51 to play. But Texas Tech shot 54 percent after halftime and outrebounded the Lumberjacks, 15-8, in the second period to secure the win. Matt Kingsley reached double figures in scoring for the third straight game with his team-leading 19 points. Sophomore point guard Eric Bell added to his Southland Conference-leading assist total with six dimes against the Red Raiders.
vs. Louisiana-Monroe: Wednesday's game will mark the 46th all-time meeting between the Lumberjacks and Warhawks. Louisiana-Monroe holds a 29-17 edge in the series, which dates back to 1963. SFA played the Warhawks 12 times during the first six years of Danny Kaspar's tenure as head coach and compiled an 8-4 record against ULM in that span. The Lumberjacks have not played the Warhawks since ULM left the Southland Conference following the 2005-06 season. SFA swept the season series with ULM that year.
The Warhawks: Louisiana-Monroe brings a 1-2 mark to Wednesday's game after scrapping in road games against No. 4 Kansas and No. 12 Michigan State. In their lone win of the season, the Warhawks defeated Northern Michigan, 60-53, in the opening round of the CBE Classic. Three ULM players reached double figures in that game, though the Warhawks shot just 38 percent and hit only one of 15 3-point attempts.
The Coaches: SFA is under the direction of head coach Danny Kaspar. Kaspar is in his eighth season at the helm for the Lumberjacks. He holds a record of 110-91 (.547) at SFA and has a 329-143 (.697) overall record in 16-plus seasons as a collegiate head coach. Louisiana-Monroe is coached by Orlando Early. Early is 29-34 (.460) in his third season as the Warhawks' head coach.
Up Next: The Lumberjacks head to DeKalb, Ill. for a Saturday showdown at Northern Illinois. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. SFA will be back on the road the following week to play at Jackson State in the back end of a home-and-home series with the Tigers.
