SFA Falls in Hammond

HAMMOND, La. - The Southeastern Louisiana Lions jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, and never looked back defeating Stephen F. Austin, 21-3, Saturday night at Strawberry Stadium in Hammond, La. The setback drops SFA to 0-5 on the season, and 0-1 in Southland Conference play. With the victory, the Lions improve to 2-3 (.400) overall and 1-0 in league play.
The `Jacks came out of the locker room trailing 14-0, but stole some of the momentum from the Lions forcing a fumble on SLU's first possession of the half. The `Jacks took over possession at midfield, but were only to move the ball 27 yards. Junior kicker Cory Long was able to convert the turnover into points drilling a 30-yard field goal to cut deficit to 11 points.
Unfortunately for SFA, that would be as close as it would get as SLU would tack on another TD to close out the game. The Lions racked up 382 yards of total offense, including 203 on the ground. SLU running back Jay Lucas finished the game with 13 carries for 158 yards and two touchdowns.
The Lumberjack offense struggled to get free from a swarming Southeastern Louisiana defense. Senior quarterback Danny Southall was only able to complete 5-of-12 passes for 51 yards. Senior Johnny Thacker led the SFA ground game carrying the ball 12 times for 77 yards. Southall also added 13 carries for 21 yards.
Freshman quarterback Jeremy Moses was a spark off the SFA bench. Moses entered the game in the fourth quarter and completed 6-of-13 passes for 57 yards.
The Lumberjacks return to action Saturday, Oct. 13, when they return home to host Nicholls State. The game against the Colonels is slated to kickoff at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium. The game will also be a part of the NCAA's "Take a Kid to the Game," which allows children ages 14-and-under to get in free.
