
SFA Takes on Nicholls State Saturday

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team (0-5/0-1) returns to Nacogdoches looking for its first victory of the season, as it hosts No. 14 Nicholls State. The Colonels enter the week with a 4-1 (.800) overall record and tied for tops in the conference with a 1-0 league mark. NSU has won its last two consecutive games, and is coming off a 58-0 thumping of Northwestern State. The game against the Colonels is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.
Saturday's game against Nicholls State marks the 24th meeting between the two schools. The 'Jacks own a 17-6 (.739) all-time record against Nicholls State. SFA has won two straight, and seven of the last eight games in the series. The Lumberjacks are 10-2 (.833) all-time against NSU in Nacogdoches, including 10-straight victories in front of the home fans. SFA recorded a 27-21 overtime victory during the 2005 season, which marked the last time these to teams met in Homer Bryce Stadium.
Quarterback Danny Southall hit Dominique Edison on a 42-yard pass with 40 seconds on the clock to give SFA a 16-13 victory. SFA compiled 307 yards of total offense while holding the Colonels to 280 yards. The 'Jacks rallied from a 10-0 deficit for the victory. The Lumberjacks defensive effort was led by Corey Campbell who finished the game with seven solo tackles.
Saturday's game will pit a Nicholls State starting offensive line that averages 6-2, 273 pounds, against a young Lumberjack starting defensive line that averages 6-2, 256 pounds. The Lumberjacks' offensive line enters the game averaging 6-4, 298 pounds. The Colonels' defensive line averages 6-3, 250 pounds.
The Lumberjacks enter the sixth game of the 2007 season with an overwhelmingly young team. The 'Jacks boast 29 (63 percent) freshmen or sophomores on their depth chart, including 11 (46 percent) on offense and 18 (82 percent) on defense.
