'Jacks Finish Second at Moe O'Brien

LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team improved one spot to finish second overall Tuesday afternoon at the Moe O'Brien Invitational. SFA recorded the second-best round of the day (290) to overcome New Orleans to place second with a 296-305-290 - 891. SFA finished the day 11 strokes behind tournament-host McNeese State for the team title.
The 'Jacks were led by junior Chad Spencer who finished with a five-under par 211 to finish second overall. Spencer finished the day only four-strokes behind individual champion Sigmunder Masson from McNeese State. Also finishing among the top 10 was rookie Matthew Oates from Diboll. Oates shot a final round one-over par 73 to finish the tournament with a 221. Oates' score was good enough to place him in a two-way tie for fourth.
Freshman Richard Wilkenfeld placed 19th overall after recording his best round of the tournament. Wilkenfeld shot a 76-79-74, to finish with a 229. Mansfield senior Ryan Salinas was only one stroke back of Wilkenfeld with a three-round score of 76-81-73 - 230. Salinas finished tied for 20th overall. Senior James Winkley finished fifth for the 'Jacks with a three-round score of 240. Winkley's score placed him 33rd overall.
The Lumberjacks return to action Monday, Oct. 9, when they host the Bill Hill - Crown Classic in Lufkin, Texas.
