NACOGDOCHES - The first round of the "Battle of the Piney Woods" went to the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks as they recorded a 13-5 victory over Sam Houston State Thursday night in Huntsville, Texas. The 'Jacks improved to 13-41 on the season and 5-23 in Southland Conference play.
SFA jumped out to a four-run lead in the second inning scoring four runs on five hits and never looked back. Sam Houston State scored one in the third and two in the fourth to pull within a run, but that was as close as the Bearkats would get.
The Lumberjacks pounded out 13 runs on 18 hits as they added two runs in the fifth, three in the seventh and four in the ninth. Every Lumberjack that stepped up to the plate got in the act, recording at least one hit.
Junior Chris Smith finished the game 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Classmate finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI and a couple of runs scored. Sophomore Buck Britton went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored from the lead off spot.
SFA returns to action Friday for the second game of the series. The game against the Bearkats is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from the SHSU Baseball Complex.
