SFA Golf Coach Mike Hopson Steps Down

NACOGDOCHES - Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack head golf coach Dr. Mike Hopson is resigning, announced SFA Athletics Director Robert Hill Thursday Morning. Hopson will return to full-time status as a Leadership Specialist in Secondary Education and Educational Leadership at the university.
"As much as Mike loves golf and working with our golf team he enjoys the classroom most," said Hill. "I appreciate his time and dedication to the SFA golf team for the past six seasons and wish him the best. I know he will not be far away should we need his help or support."
Dr. Hopson took over the Lumberjack golf program in 2000-01 and guided the 'Jacks from an eighth-place finish at the Southland Conference Championships his first season to a third-place showing just two years later. Among the five-member SFA golf team that season, three were freshmen, while the other two were only sophomores.
During his time in Nacogdoches, Dr. Hopson coached seven All-SLC athletes, including the 2002 SLC Freshman of the Year and the 2004 SLC Newcomer of the Year.
"Our golf team was fortunate to have one of the best senior players in the Southwest as their head coach. His lessons and guidance will be missed. We were really fortunate to have him with us for the past six years," added Hill.
SFA recently finished seventh at the SLC Championships at the Kingwood Deerwood Course in Kingwood, Texas. Senior Brian Grossman was named to the All-Southland Conference third team after finishing tied for seventh overall.
SFA will immediately begin a national search to find a replacement for Hopson.
