NACOGDOCHES - Seniors Lee Lara, Tara Hersey, Julie Morse and freshman Kim Daley each collected two hits for Stephen F. Austin in its 7-4 victory over Texas-Arlington Sunday at Hoya Field. The same four players combined for all seven RBI with the seniors getting two apiece and Lara and Hersey scoring two runs.
In the top half of the first inning, SFA was in a scary situation with the bases loaded and no outs. UTA's Jenna Fortune hit the ball to third baseman, Lara, who decided to throw to home to get the first out of the inning. Courtni Anderson then hit an RBI single to center field to give the Lady Mavs a 1-0 lead before April Clougherty struck out and Lacey Leadbetter flew out to left field to end the inning and leave three on base.
The Ladyjacks came out strong in the bottom half of the same inning. After Carrie Woydziak walked and advanced to second on a Crystal Dahlquist sacrifice bunt, Woydziak scored on Lara's double to left field. Hersey then singled to center field to send Lara across the plate for SFA's second run of the inning, taking a 2-1 lead.
With two on and two out, Hersey scored and Nicole Carter advanced to third on Morse's center field single. Carter then scored on Daley's single to left field to give SFA a 4-1 lead after an inning of play.
The Lady Mavs fought back in the top of the second when they hit two solo home runs and put another run on the board on a sac fly to knot the score at four.
In the third inning, SFA broke the tie when Hersey crossed the dish on Morse's double to right center to take a 5-4 lead.
Lara then put up an insurance run for SFA with a home run over the left center field wall in the bottom of the fifth inning. It was her seventh home run of the season, tying the season record at SFA.
The shot was followed by a double by Jessica Tullos, who scored on an error by the UTA shortstop to give the Ladyjacks a 7-4 lead.
The Lady Mavs would be retired in order the next two innings to make the score final.
The win boosts SFA's overall record to 16-27 and 6-15 in SLC play. UTA falls to 28-16 on the year and 16-6 in SLC action.
The Ladyjacks return to the field on Saturday, April 29, to wrap up the 2006 season against Southeastern Louisiana. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. from Hoya Field.
