NACOGDOCHES - Tara Hersey's walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh not only tied her for home runs in a season, but broke the 15-year old record for career home runs at Stephen F. Austin. The solo-shot over the right field wall in Wednesday night's 3-2 win over the North Texas Mean Green was the 18th of her career.
It was Hersey's seventh home run of her senior season and tied Holly Nuber's record for home runs in a season set in 1985. The 15-year old record was set in 1991 by Gina Webb in 1991 who hit 17 home runs in her career, spanning from 1988-91.
Hersey, a native of Santa Fe, Texas, finished the night cap going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored after going hitless in Game 1.
SFA had jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and gave up a run in each the second and fourth innings to allow the Mean Green to knot the score before Hersey's walk-off homer.
In Game 1, the Ladyjacks had a 1-0 lead but gave it up with a UNT three-run fourth inning and could not recover as the Mean Green took the win, 8-1.
The split sent SFA's overall record to 16-26 and UNT to an 18-27 season record. The Ladyjacks will return to the field on Saturday to host Texas-Arlington in a Southland Conference three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
