NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team improved to 8-10 on the season with a doubleheader sweep against the Grambling State Lady Tigers, 10-0 and 9-1, Wednesday at Hoya Field at the Nacogdoches Baseball Complex. Both games were held to five innings.
In Game 1, SFA took an early 1-0 lead when senior Julie Morse hit an RBI double to right center field to score freshman Benet Higgs, who had earlier hit a single to shortstop and stole second.
It was in the third inning, however, that the Ladyjacks ensured the win as they added on nine runs, including a two-RBI in-the-park home run hit by the right fielder, Nicole Carter.
Freshman Kari Hugie held the Lady Tigers to only two hits over five innings. She struck out nine batters and did not allow any walks. She took the win to even up her record at 2-2.
Higgs, a freshman from Antioch, Calif., went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Senior Carrie Woydziak also scored two runs.
The Ladyjacks had six extra-base hits in the second half of Wednesday's doubleheader with Morse, Lee Lara, Kristyn Shelton, and Sydney Davis hitting doubles and Lara and Kim Daley hitting home runs. It was the fifth home run of the spring for Lara and the first of Daley's collegiate career.
Lara was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and four RBI on the night. Higgs had two stolen bases in the nightcap.
Senior Traci Moore started the game on the mound for SFA and allowed two hits over three innings. She struck out three. Freshman Debra Boles pitched two innings in relief for the Ladyjacks and she allowed only one hit in two innings while striking out two. Neither pitcher allowed a walk.
Moore earned the win, moving her one game about the .500 mark at 3-2.
SFA will travel to Huntsville on Saturday to face Sam Houston State in Southland Conference action. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 2 p.m. and the series' closing game will be on Sunday at 1 p.m.
