TULSA, Okla. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team took advantage of two Notre Dame errors, scoring on both of them, to take an extra-inning win from the Fighting Irish on Sunday, 2-1, in the final day of the Best Western Airport Festival in Tulsa.
It was a pitchers' duel through the first five innings between the Ladyjacks' Traci Moore and the Irish's Heather Booth. Booth struck out eight batters in five innings before giving up a run to SFA on a wild pitch late in the fifth.
The Irish tied things up in the next inning when Sara Schoonaert hit a double off of Moore and crossed the plate on a Gessica Hufnagle left field single. The tied score pushed the game into extra innings.
In the eighth, with Lara placed on second base, freshman Jessica Tullos hit a sacrifice bunt to move Lara over to third. A throwing error by Irish third baseman, Linda Kohan, allowed Lara to score the winning run.
Senior Nicole Carter, who made a relief appearance in the eighth inning took the win for SFA, giving her a 2-6 overall record. Brittney Barger took the loss for Notre Dame, moving her overall record to 4-3. Moore pitched 5.1 innings for SFA, giving up six hits and striking out three.
For SFA, senior Carrie Woydziak had three hits in four at-bats and Lara was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The win puts SFA's overall record at 6-10 and evens up Notre Dame's record at 7-7.
The Ladyjacks return to the field on Wednesday, March 8, for a doubleheader against Grambling State. The games will begin at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Hoya Field at the Nacogdoches Baseball Complex
