SAN ANTONIO - An early two-run lead by the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks was not enough to hold the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners, who scored at least one run per inning to finish the sweep of SFA, 11-4, in the Southland Conference series' finale Sunday at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio.
The Ladyjacks put themselves on the board early when senior Carrie Woydziak wasted no time taking advantage of a Roadrunner error, reaching second base to lead-off the first inning. Woydziak crossed the dish when Jessica Tullos hit an RBI single through the right side. Julie Morse, who was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on Tullos' single and third on an infield single by Nicole Carter. Morse then scored when Tara Hersey singled through the right side to score the run.
UTSA, however, responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the same inning to knot things up at two runs apiece before scoring three runs in the second inning to take control of the lead. The Roadrunners two runs in the third inning moved the score to 7-2.
In the fourth inning, Carter led off the inning with a double to right center field. Hersey then came to the plate and hit a home run to put the Ladyjacks within three, 7-4.
The Roadrunners kept SFA at bay, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to take the win, 11-4.
Hersey finished the game going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Her two-run home run was her second this season.
Freshman pitcher Kari Hugie made her 11th start of the season and took the loss, her fifth of the year, after giving up five runs on five hits in an inning of work.
The Ladyjacks fell to 9-18 on the season and 1-8 in conference play. The Roadrunners increased their record to 16-8 overall and 10-2 in SLC action.
SFA will return to the diamond on Saturday, April 1, to face McNeese State in an SLC double header. The first pitch will be thrown at 1 p.m. in Hoya Field at the Nacogdoches Baseball Complex.
