Missouri State Wins Crown Classic

LUFKIN, Texas - Missouri State couldn't hold off a late charge by Oral Roberts Tuesday on the second day of the rain-shortened 2006 SFA Crown Classic. But the Bears still took home the team title. Oral Roberts shot a tournament-best 300 in a windy Round 2 and finished tied with Missouri State for championships honors. Missouri State held the tiebreaker edge, though, and Oral Roberts came away as the runner-up. Texas-Pan American was the third-place team, four strokes back of the leaders.
The race for individual honors was just as tight. Oral Roberts' Mauricio Tamez came into Day 2 tied for the lead, after opening the tournament with a 69. But Beau Dark, of McNeese State, carded a 68 Tuesday to come from two strokes back and edge Tamez as the individual medalist. Tamez shot 71 in Round 2, finishing the tournament at four-under, 140. Southern Illinois' Chad Cooper and Kyle Tudi of Texas-Pan American finished tied for third.
The Lumberjacks wrapped up the tournament in eighth place, with a team score of 607. Seniors Brian Grossman and Jason Landry were SFA's top individual scorers. They finished in a tie for 16th place with a two-day tally of 150. Grossman shot a 79 Tuesday, while Landry shot 76.
SFA sophomore Tyler Trichell shot a 79 in Round 2 to finish 29th in the tournament with a two-day score of 153. Freshmen Johnathan Porter and Josh Irving finished 34th and 40th, respectively. Porter shot 79 Tuesday to finish at 154, and Irving carded an 81 in Round 2 for a final score of 156.
Junior Ryan Salinas competed for the Lumberjacks as an individual medalist and finished 40th. His 78 on Tuesday gave him a two-round total of 156. Senior Josh Price also played as an individual and carded a 77 in Round 2 to finish at 157. Junior James Winkley shot 81 Tuesday for a total of 162 to finish in 56th.
SFA will be back in action Monday, March 27, when the Lumberjacks compete at the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojan Golf Classic, in Little Rock, Ark.
