NACOGDOCHES - After having gone hitless in her previous three at-bats, freshman shortstop Sydney Davis drove in the winning run to give the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks a 7-6 extra-inning victory over the Northwestern State Lady Demons in Game 2 of Tuesday's Southland Conference opening doubleheader at Hoya Field. The Lady Demons took the win in Game 1, 9-1.
In the night cap, the Ladyjacks took an early lead when senior designated player, Julie Morse, hit a three-run home run to center field to score senior Lee Lara and freshman Benet Higgs.
After the Lady Demons added a run to make the score 3-1, Lara belted her first home run of the season over the left field fence to put the Ladyjacks up by three runs.
The Ladyjacks, however, could not hold on as Northwestern State tacked on three runs of their own in the fourth inning to tie the game. SFA would put itself back in the lead after freshman Kim Daley crossed the plate on an error by the Northwestern State first baseman in the fourth inning and Lara hit another home run, this time over the right field fence, in the fifth.
After Lara's home run, the Lady Demons brought in Amanda Glenn to pitch in relief of Game 2 starter, Kristen Lindley. Glenn stopped the Ladyjack bats and the Lady Demons scored two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at six, forcing the game into extra innings after neither team scored in the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Higgs hit an infield single and advanced to second on Lara's single to shortstop. A single by Morse would load the bases for Davis, who had gone 0-for-3 throughout the game. With no outs, Davis put a single through the left side to score Higgs and give the Ladyjacks the 7-6 victory.
Glenn suffered the loss and Traci Moore took the win for the Ladyjacks to move her record to 2-1. Lindley and SFA's starter, Kari Hugie, took the no decision.
Lara finished the game going 4-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBI and two home runs.
In Game 1 of Tuesday's action, the Ladyjacks were not as fortunate as they suffered a 9-1 loss to Northwestern State.
The split keeps both SFA and Northwestern State with a .500 winning percentage as the Ladyjacks move to 5-5 on the season and the Lady Demons move to 6-6. Both teams are 1-1 in SLC play.
The teams will close out their conference-opening series Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. from Hoya Field at the Nacogdoches Baseball Complex.
