LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Despite scoring a season-high eight runs, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team dropped a one-run decision, 9-8, Sunday afternoon to Arkansas-Little Rock. The loss drops SFA to 3-11 (.214) on the season.
Similar to the third game against UALR in Nacogdoches earlier this season, SFA jumped out to two-run first inning lead. Juniors Steven Hill and Chase Sadler belted back-to-back home runs to give SFA the advantage. The `Jacks took a 2-1 lead into top half of the third when freshman Adam Bosley hit a double to right center to score Kyle Freeman from second base. After junior Chris Smith drove in the fourth run with a sacrifice fly, classmate Clay Britton hit a double to right field to score Bosley to give SFA a 5-1 lead.
The momentum didn't stay in the `Jacks corner for long as UALR rallied for five runs in the bottom of the third. The Trojans scored their five runs on four hits to claim their first lead of the game, 6-5. UALR held the advantage until the sixth, when SFA posted another three-run inning to jump back in front.
After the Trojan pitchers surrendered two walks and a bunt single to load the bases, Freeman drew a walk from Beau Brickell to score Zach Gardner. Hill then drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field. Bosley recorded the final RBI with the `Jacks fourth walk of the inning.
The Lumberjacks took the two-run lead into the seventh inning, but the homestanding Trojans rallied for three runs. SFA was unable score in its final at-bats, as Adam Miller pitched a scoreless 4.0 innings of work in relief for the win.
Junior Josh Bone got the start for SFA and was one of six pitchers used by head coach Donnie Watson. Junior Jessie Bergstrom was hung with the loss, despite surrendering only one run.
The `Jacks were led at the plate by Hill and Bosley, who each finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBI. Hill hit his team-high third home run of the season, while Sadler also went 1-for-3 recording his first home run in a Lumberjack uniform.
The `Jacks begin Southland Conference play Friday when they host Texas State in a three-game series. Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Jaycees Field. The Saturday and Sunday games are slated to get under way at 1 p.m.
