BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team moved its season record to 4-4 on Friday after splitting a twin bill at the Birmingham Southern Panther Spring Fling. In the first half of the day's action, the Ladyjacks defeated Mississippi Valley State, 4-1, before dropping a 19-1 decision to Birmingham Southern.
Freshman pitcher Debra Boles made her collegiate debut against the Delta Devilettes of MVSU. Boles pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits over seven innings and allowing only one run. She issued three walks while striking out five to earn her first collegiate win.
MVSU crossed the plate early, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and kept the lead until the fourth inning when the Ladyjacks scored two runs to be on the upside of a one-run lead. SFA tacked on a run in fifth and sixth innings to take the lead, 4-1, the eventual final score.
Senior outfielder, Carrie Woydziak, went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Freshman shortstop, Sydney Davis, went 1-for-1 with two runs scored, a triple and an RBI. Freshman Kendall Driver went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double.
In the second half of Friday's doubleheader, the Ladyjacks gave up two runs early in the first inning to tournament host, Birmingham Southern. The Ladyjacks responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the same inning to make it a one-run game.
The Panthers' 11-run second inning silenced the Ladyjack offense and with another run in the third and a five-run fourth inning, the Panthers eased their way to a 19-1 victory over SFA. Senior pitcher Nicole Carter fell to 1-3 on the year.
The Ladyjacks moved their record to 4-4 on the season while Mississippi Valley State fell to 0-11 and Birmingham Southern moved to 7-2.
SFA returns home for its home and Southland Conference opening doubleheader on Tuesday, February 28, against Northwestern State. Game 1 is slated for a 5 p.m. start with Game 2 beginning at 7 p.m. The games will be played at Hoya Field at the Nacogdoches Baseball Complex, the new home of Ladyjack softball.
