BATON ROUGE, La. - After having their season opener against South Dakota State called in the first inning of Friday's season opener because of rain, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team was winless in their double header at the Purple and Gold Challenge at Tiger Field on Saturday. SFA lost to SDSU, 3-1, and to tournament host, Louisiana State, 11-0.
Early Friday, senior Carrie Woydziak led off the first inning with an infield single. She advanced to second on an SDSU wild pitch and then reached third on senior Lee Lara's groundout to shortstop. Senior Julie Morse doubled up the middle to score Woydziak, giving SFA an early 1-0 lead before the game was called on account of rain.
The weather forced Day 1 of the Purple and Gold Challenge to be postponed until Saturday, when the Ladyjacks and the Jackrabbits resumed the game in the bottom of the first inning.
SDSU answered SFA's lone run to tie the game at one before taking the lead in the second inning to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
Freshman Kari Hugie gave up three runs on three hits and struckout six despite taking the loss in her collegiate debut. Woydziak, Morse, and junior Crystal Dahlquist all had one hit in the contest.
In Game 2 of SFA's doubleheader, the Ladyjacks faced LSU and took their first shut out of the season in LSU's season opener.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning before tacking on another run in the third and sealing it with a seven-run fourth inning to make the score 11-0.
Senior Nicole Carter pitched all four innings for the Ladyjacks, giving up 11 runs on 11 hits and striking out two. At the plate, Carter had a 2-2 performance, as did sophomore second baseman, Heather Hebert. Dahlquist, Lara and Morse added a hit apiece to give the Ladyjacks seven hits in the game.
The Purple and Gold Challenge will continue tomorrow when SFA faces Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 9 a.m. and fellow Southland Conference member, Northwestern State in non-conference action at 11:15 a.m. at Tiger Field in Baton Rouge, La.
