NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack tennis team opened their home season on Saturday morning when it faced Oral Roberts University and Texas Southern at the SFA Courts. The Ladyjacks split their matches defeating ORU, 4-2, and falling to TSU, 4-3.
In their first match of the day, Oral Roberts took an early lead when they took the doubles point, but SFA quickly took over when Kama Scott, Lauren Nowicki, Megan Langston and Gaby Gadeva all won their singles matches to give SFA the win.
Against Texas Southern, SFA swept all the doubles matches to take the point. Gadeva, along with Mary Harrison and Whitney DeYoung, won their singles' points, but Texas Southern won the top four singles matches.
Gadeva, a freshman from Sofia, Bulgaria, had a 3-0 record for the day. Against ORU, she defeated Deborah Skiustad, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 6 singles. Later in the day, she, along with freshman Mary Harrison, defeated Texas Southern's Priscilla Cervantes and Deya Balboa in No. 3 doubles, 8-0. In No. 5 singles, she once again defeated Balboa, 7-5 and 6-2.
The split moves SFA's record to an overall 2-3 on the year. The Ladyjacks return to the court next weekend when they travel to Corpus Christi to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas-Pan American on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
