NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team got 21 points and 13 rebounds from senior Charity Egenti to record its fourth-straight win. The Ladyjacks dispensed of North Texas, 75-68, Thursday night to improve to 6-3 (.667) on the season. The loss dropped UNT to 2-5 (.286).
The Ladyjacks survived a contest that saw eight ties and 16 lead changes. Neither team led by more than seven points and that advantage came for SFA within the final eight seconds of the game.
The Ladyjacks trailed by a point late in the game, and North Texas had three opportunities to add to its lead, but SFA forced the Mean Green to put up tough, contested shots that missed the mark. Leading 67-66 with under a minute to play, junior Nikki Carr nailed a three-pointer to give SFA a four-point lead. SFA freshman Whitney Cormier recorded a steal and was fouled on the ensuing UNT possession to put the game away.
Although the Ladyjacks struggled at times from the floor, they continued to battle and finished the game 26-of-79 (.329) from the floor. The Mean Green shot 50 percent in the first half, but fell well off the pace in the second. North Texas finished the game 26-of-66 (.394) from the field.
SFA also won the battle on the boards outrebounding their visitors, 54-46. The Ladyjacks were led by a career-high 13 from Egenti. SFA also got nine rebounds from senior Evelyn Edwards and seven from Cormier and Carr. The Ladyjacks were especially dominant on the offensive glass, pulling down 30 offensive rebounds.
Carr chipped in 18 points, while Cormier added 17. Edwards finished the game with six points, to go along with her nine rebounds, while senior Jennifer Simpson came off the bench to add seven points on 2-of-3 (.667) shooting.
The Ladyjacks will open a season-long six game road swing Saturday, Dec. 16 when they travel to Lorman, Miss., to take on Alcorn State. The game against the Lady Braves is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
