
SFA Golf Eighth After First Day of Crown Classic

LUFKIN, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team finished the first day of competition eighth overall at the Bill Hill - Crown Classic Monday evening at the Crown Colony Country Club. The 'Jacks struggled in the opening round shooting a 14-over par 302 to finish ninth, but battled back in the second round to shoot a 298 to improve one spot. Baylor heads into the final round as the leader, shooting a two-under par 574.
The Lumberjacks were led by sophomore Josh Irving who shot a 72-74 - 146 to finish the day in a six-way tie for ninth. Junior Chad Spencer struggled in the opening round with a four-over par 76, but shot a one-over 73 in the second round to finish the day tied for 23rd. Diboll freshman Matt Oates finished the day only one stroke back of Spencer. Oates is currently tied for 23rd overall. Senior Ryan Salinas recorded an 80-79 - 159 to place tied for 61st after the first day of competition. Freshman Richard Wilkenfeld recorded an 86 in the first round, but improved his score by 11 strokes in the second round to finish the day with a 161. Wilkenfeld is currently tied for 64th overall.
SFA also had two athletes competing on an individual basis. Senior James Winkley is currently tied for 64th with a 161, while sophomore Josh Porter is currently tied for 68th with a score of 83-79 - 162.
The Lumberjacks will return to the course Tuesday morning for the final round of action in the Bill Hill - Crown Classic. SFA will tee off at 8:15 a.m.
