HAMMOND, La. - Junior running back Louie Runnels carried the ball 22 times for a career-high 205 yards and one touchdown as the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks rolled to a 35-10 victory over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday night in Hammond, La. The Lumberjacks are now 2-6 overall and 2-1 in Southland Conference play.
The Lumberjacks took a 14-10 lead heading into halftime on a seven-yard run from junior quarterback Danny Southall. SFA held the momentum in the second half, despite turning the ball over on their first possession of the half. After the turnover, the SFA offense went right back to Runnels, and the Lions didn't have an answer. Runnels finished the night averaging 9.3 yards per carry.
While the Lumberjack offense was busy racking up the yards (407 yards of total offense), the SFA defense was busy making sure Southeastern Louisiana was stuck in neutral. SFA held the lions to 176 yards of total offense, including just 20 yards on the ground.
The Lumberjacks recorded five sacks and picked off one pass. Sophomore Brian Ford recorded his first career interception, which he returned 39 yards for a touchdown.
The Lumberjacks return to action Saturday, Nov. 4 when they host Sam Houston State. The game against the Bearkats will begin at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.
