DALLAS - In their first road competition of the year, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack English equestrian team rode past SMU Saturday, 640 to 594. In an English-only show, SFA and SMU were tied at 5-5 and had to fall on their raw points total to determine the winner.
In the equitation over fences division, the Ladyjacks fell 3-2 with Alex Berry and Randi Spencer taking the points. Berry won her point by a half-point margin while Spencer beat out SMU's Lauren Hester, 65.5-64. Despite being defeated 70.5-70, Kristin Landes was named the equitation over fences MVP.
In the equitation on the flat division, SFA took a 3-2 win. After Ladyjack Rebecca Harrison defeated Lauren O'Neill, 58-57.5, SMU took the next two points. Spencer then tied the score at two when the Mustangs' Haley Hyland was disqualified. SFA's Tara Solbrig's score of 60.5 defeated Morgan Wiley's 57 points to give SFA the win.
"This was our very first competition on the road this season," said SFA English coach Jennifer Wiggins. "I was very proud of the way the team performed on unfamiliar horses."
The Ladyjacks will travel to Martin, Tenn., Saturday, Nov. 4, to face Tennessee-Martin.
