NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack equestrian team opened their 2006 season with a double-header, hosting Texas A&M and TCU over the weekend. On Saturday, the Ladyjacks fell 11-5 (1,195- 1,091 raw points) to the Aggies, but came back with a strong showing against TCU for a 7-5 (842-804 raw points) victory on Sunday.
Against Texas A&M, SFA fell 7-1 in the English disciplines. Each Aggie rider took the point for a 4-0 sweep in the equitation over fences before taking three of the next four points in the equitation on the flat. SFA's Randi Spencer defeated the Aggies' Ali Mueller 84-82 for the Ladyjacks' lone English point.
SFA and Texas A&M tied the Western riding at four, but the raw point total of 554 to 487 gave the Aggies the victory. In Western horsemanship, Texas A&M took the 3-1 victory. SFA scored when Kayla Krambeck outscored Christine Sceets, 72-70. The Ladyjacks defeated the Aggies in the reining category, 3-1, with Jessica Weaver taking the highest score with 72 points.
On Sunday, the Ladyjacks swept the Horned Frogs in the equitation over fences with a 4-0 score. Ladyjack Kristin Landes was the top scorer in the category with 82 points and was named MVP of the equitation over fences. TCU tied the score, however, with a 4-0 showing in the equitation on the flat. Despite the 4-4 tie, SFA defeated TCU with a raw point total score, 557-529.
In Western horsemanship, Kyra Cruse and Weaver each scored 74.5 points to give the Ladyjacks a 2-0 win. In the reining category, SFA and the Horned Frogs tied the score at one. Jamie Melgares' and Weaver's scores of 68 points apiece was just enough to give the Ladyjacks the 136-135 win in the reining category. Weaver was named the show's Western horesemanship MVP.
SFA will return to the arena Saturday, Oct. 14, when it hosts Delaware State at the SFA Equine Center.
