
SFA Silences Lady Lions

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team jumped out to a 14-0 lead over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday night, and never looked back coasting to an 83-48 victory in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks improved to 8-5 (.615) overall and 2-0 in Southland Conference play.
The Ladyjacks shot 31-for-59 (.525) from the field, while holding Southeastern Louisiana to a 19-of-61 (.311) performance. The Ladyjacks also forced the visitors into 27 turnovers, which SFA was able to cash in for 41 points. The Ladyjacks dominated SLU in the low post, outscoring the Lady Lions, 42-22, in the paint. SFA was led by junior Evelyn Edwards who recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.
The Lady Lions made a small run at SFA midway through the first half after the Ladyjacks built a 14-point advantage. Southeastern Louisiana rattled off seven unanswered points to pull to within seven, 19-12, with 10:33 remaining. It was still a seven-point SFA lead (21-14) with 7:47 on the clock, when sophomore guard Nikki Carr sparked an 11-0 run to give SFA an 18-point advantage. The Ladyjacks went into the locker room leading by 14 points, 36-22, and were never seriously challenged in the second half.
Carr finished the game with a team-high 13 points. She also grabbed four rebounds, dished out four assists and recorded three steals. Senior LaToya Mills added 12 points and seven rebounds, but may have been most effective on the defensive end where she recorded a career-high six steals. Classmate Kirby Killingsworth added nine points on 3-of-5 (.600) shooting, while freshman Jessica Gaines came off the bench to score a career-high eight points.
Southeastern Louisiana was led by Kristy Carlin who scored a team-high 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Brenita Williams added eight points and eight rebounds for the Lady Lions.
The Ladyjacks return to action Thursday when they travel to Beaumont, Texas to take on the Lamar Lady Cardinals. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m., from the Montagne Center.
