NACOGDOCHES - First year Lumberjack head football coach Robert McFarland led his troops in their first workout of fall camp Friday afternoon at Homer Bryce Stadium. Eighty-Eight student-athletes reported to campus Thursday morning to begin preparations for the 2005 campaign. Friday's practice was the first of 29 sessions before the Sept. 1st season-opener against Henderson State.
"The first few days of practice we are going use to get our guys acclimated and work on our base package," said McFarland. "We still have a few guys that are finishing up their summer classes, so we want them to get their business taken care of in the classroom. This is a moment that my staff and I have worked hard for since we came on board and we're looking forward to working with our young men as we prepare for the 2005 season."
SFA returns 41 letterwinners from last year's 6-5 squad, including 2005 Preseason All-Southland Conference selections Jerry Little, Matt Hoelscher, Chance Dennis and Keldrick Holman.
The `Jacks enter camp looking to replace two-time All-SLC quarterback Michael Williams. SFA has two solid options coming out of spring drills in fifth-year senior Zeke Dixon and the versatile Danny Southall. Dixon was unflappable in three spring scrimmages going 59-of-86 (67.8 percent) for 680 yards, eight touchdowns and only one interception. Southall has seen limited action under center but his speed and athleticism has already earned him playing time at a wide-out spot during his youthful career. Along with freshmen Rodney Freeman, Clint Bricker and TCU transfer James Battle the `Jacks will have a healthy battle for the starting position.
Notes: The annual "Meet the `Jacks" has been scheduled for Tuesday Aug. 23, at 6 p.m., in the Grand Ballroom of the University Center.
