NACOGDOCHES, Texas-- Eighty-eight Stephen F. Austin football student-athletes reported for the start of fall camp today on the SFA campus. Included among the group of 88 are nine division I-A transfers and 22 true freshmen.
First year head coach Robert McFarland will open camp with a single workout Friday afternoon. Student-athletes went through orientation meetings Thursday afternoon and evening with members of the athletic staff and coaches. The Lumberjacks will practice in shorts and helmets through Tuesday before donning pads for next Wednesday's workout.
Nine division I-A transfers dot the roster as camp opens for the 2005 squad. Four are defensive players four are on the offensive side of the ball, and one transter is listed as both a tight end and defensive end.
"I really feel that we have been able to help ourselves with the addition of these transfers. Some of these young men initially signed with programs a long way from home and are looking to get into a situation a little closer to home or are hoping to come here and get a shot at playing time a little quicker than they would have where they were playing," said McFarland.
The transfers include:
James Battle QB 6-2 225 SO Denton, Texas / Ryan (TCU)
Clint LaTray OL 6-3 292 FR Allen, Texas/ Allen (Clemson)
Stephon Rhea DB 5-10 170 SO Houston / Klein Forest (Minnesota)
Andrew Fleck TE/DE 6-3 263 JR Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe (Virginia Tech)
Mike Benson DL 6-5 265 SR Houston / St. Pius (SMU)
