NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team was back at it Thursday morning in the August heat of East Texas. The `Jacks continue to prepare for the Sept. 1st, season-opener against Henderson State.
The SFA defense has had the upper hand in the early part of fall camp pressuring the quarterbacks, forcing turnovers and dishing out punishing hits, but the Lumberjack offense continues to make strides in the right direction. After being stopped on its first set of downs, the offense responded with a short pass to Lester Simmons and let him zig-zag his way up the field, evading would-be tacklers, as he advanced the ball for a 30-yard pickup. Running back Louie Runnels added two 10-yard runs and a 10-yard catch and freshman Damian Perkins notched a 35-yeard scamper against the first-team defense.
The special teams got into the act as well on Thursday as the `Jacks' punters and long-snappers showed off their wares. Sophomore Ryan Gooch was impressive knocking one booming spiral after another inside the 20-yard line.
The `Jacks take to the field tonight for a 7:30 p.m., workout at Homer Bryce Stadium. Practices are free and open to the public.
Notes: The annual `Meet the Jacks' will be Tuesday Aug. 23, in the University Center's Grand Ballroom at 6:30 p.m. Tickets to the event are $10 and can be purchased from any Fredonia Rotary or by contacting Gary Russell at 560-4681.
