NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- A retirement reception honoring SFA athletic director Steve McCarty has been planned for July 22 on the SFA campus from 4-7 p.m. McCarty announced earlier this spring that he will step down as athletic director at the university in August.
A reception honoring McCarty and his wife, Sara, has been planned for July 22 from 4-7 p.m. in the Twilight Ballroom in the SFA University Center. All friends and well-wishers are invited to attend.
McCarty is wrapping up a 21-year career at SFA, the last 15 as the athletics director. During his time in Nacogdoches, Lumberjack and Ladyjack athletics have seen success across the board. The football team has earned two NCAA I-AA playoff berths, three NCAA Volleyball Championship appearances and two NIVC appearances, 14 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship appearances, an appearance in the NCAA Men's Golf Regional, three Southland Conference soccer titles, an NCAA Soccer Championship appearance and six SLC cross country titles, including the past four men's championships, two women's track and field titles and one men's track and field title.
The 2004-05 academic year has been no exception, as SFA has brought home five Southland Conference titles so far this academic year. The Ladyjacks won conference titles in soccer, a co-championship in volleyball, and indoor track and field while the Lumberjacks won league titles in cross country and indoor track and field.
SFA Athletics has seen an overall upgrade in its facilities in the past eight-and-an-half years under McCarty. During that time SFA has built the Jimmy W. Murphy Wellness Center and the new athletic training and academic center and has plans on the drawing board for a new baseball / softball facility in the near future.
He was recognized nationally for accomplishments at SFA last June when he received the Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award from the All-American Football Foundation.
McCarty is a two-time graduate of the university and is also a member of the SFA Alumni Association's "Football Coaches Hall of Honor."
