
Softball Sweeps Louisiana Tech

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Louisiana Tech Wednesday night by scores of 6-5 in game and 3-1 in game two. The Ladyjacks needed estra innings to pick up the win in the opener and picked up a pair of runs in the fifth inning of the second game to complete the sweep.
SFA (11-19, 3-12) built an early 4-1 lead in the first game, only to have Louisiana Tech come back with a pair of runs in the fourth inning and a single run in the fifth to tie the score at 4-4 and send it to extra innings.
Carrie Woydziak and Tara Hersey collected three hits apiece in the opener to lead SFA at the plate. Hersey had two doubles and drove in a run in game one while Woydziak had a double and had two RBI for the Ladyjacks, Lee Lara also went 1-2 with a run run scored and two RBI.
The Techsters scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to take a 5-4 lead, but SFA answered with two runs in the bottom of the extra frame for the win. Ragen Rutherford was placed at second to start the inning and scored with one out on an RBI double by Lara. Lara scored the winning run on a double off the bat of Sidney Rutherford for the game winner.
Kaitlin Morrison (2-2) picked up the win in game one and was one of four SFA pitchers to work two innings each.
SFA banged out 10 hits in the first game off Louisiana Tech pitching.
The Ladyjacks kept up the momentum in game two with each team scoring a run in the first inning. Woydziak led off the first inning with a single and came around to score after stealing second and moving to third on a groundout. She scored on a fielder's choice by Hersey.
The score remained tied through the top of the fifth before SFA picked up two runs in their half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.
SFA picked up five hits in game two with Woydziak picking up a pair of singles and scoring a run and Lee Lara adding two hits and a run scored. Hersey and Krsiten Gabourie had RBI's in game two for SFA.
Julie Morse (4-5) got the win in game two, pitching 2.2 innings in relief of Morrison. Nicole Carter was credited with save while working the final two innings and not allowing a hit.
SFA returns to action this weekend at Nicholls State.
