Lumberjacks Host UC Davis

NACOGDOCHES - LUMBERJACKS AND AGGIES SQUARE OFF IN NACOGDOCHES: The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team will take a break from Southland Conference action and look to put an end to its three-game skid Saturday when it hosts UC Davis. The game against the Aggies is slated to begin at 4 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium. The 'Jacks are 4-4 (.500) overall after dropping their third-straight contest of the season this past weekend. The Aggies are 5-3 (.625) on the year after their 20-13 upset victory over 10th-ranked Cal Poly.
SFA vs. THE AGGIES: The Lumberjacks are a perfect 1-0 all-time against UC Davis. The two universities met on the gridiron for the first time in 2004 when the then 10th-ranked Lumberjacks held off the 21st-ranked Aggies, 22-19, at Toomey Field in Davis, Calif.
LAST TIME vs. THE AGGIES: The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead against UC Davis, before the Aggies rallied to score 19 unanswered. After falling behind, the 'Jacks defense came out fired up in the second half, allowing only 98 yards of offense, including only 12 yards in the fourth quarter. The Lumberjacks scored the go-ahead touchdown when quarterback Michael Williams orchestrated a 10-play, 79-yard drive midway through the fourth quarter. Derek Farmer led SFA with 24 carries for 99 yards. Williams finished the game 13-of-25 (52 percent) for 217 yards and two touchdowns. Williams hit classmate Tony Tompkins seven times for 103 yards.
GROWING PAINS: The Lumberjacks entered the 2005 season with one of the youngest squads in school history with 44 new faces on the roster. Among the 86 players on the roster, 53 (62 percent) of them are sophomores or younger. The Lumberjacks' youth movement has gone through some growing pains over the past few weeks trying to battle its way out of a three-game skid. It marks the longest skid for SFA since the 2004 team dropped three-straight. That squad rebounded by blowing out McNeese State, 55-7, in Nacogdoches.
