RICHARDSON, Texas-- Brian Grossman, a sophomore on the Stephen F. Austin State University golf team, fired a 67 at Sherril Park Golf Course in Richardson this week to tie for medalist honors at a local U.S. Open qualifier. By virtue of his finish, Grossman will now compete at a sectional qualifier, June 8 in Richmond, Texas. The sectional qualifier is one of 13 such events held around the country with top finishers earning their way into the 2004 U.S. Open field.
Grossman, a two-time All-Southland Conference performer with the 'Jacks, tied Matt Weibring of Dallas for top honors at the local qualifier and was one of two amateur golfers to advance from that local qualifier to the sectional next month.
According to the United States Golf Association website, 8,726 entries from around the world were accepted for the 2004 U.S. Open which will be held in June 17-20, 2004 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. There are 64 golfers currently in the field for the tournament with the remainder of the field of 156 to be filled from qualifiers and other exemptions granted by the USGA.
