HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Brian Grossman, a sophomore from Mansfield, shot a final round 67 Tuesday at the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate Tournament, hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi, to get into a three-way playoff for medalist honors and lead SFA to a second place team finish in the event. Grossman won the playoff with a birdie on the first extra hole to claim medalist honors over teammate Dustin Byrd and Michael Soroka from Southern Mississippi.
The win is Grossman's second tournament title of the year. He won in the fall at the Shangri-La Shootout hosted by Oral Roberts University in Monkey Island, Okla. He entered play Tuesday in sixth place, five shots back of second round leader Fredrick Lundberg of West Florida. His 67 Tuesday is his low round for the year. It also marks the third time in the last four tournaments Grossman has posted a top five finish.
Byrd, a junior from Fort Worth, entered the final round in second place and shot a final round 69 to get into the playoff at nine under par, 207. Grossman and Byrd helped lead the 'Jacks to a second place finish behind tournament host and champion Southern Mississippi.
