THIBODAUX, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team recorded four turnovers and surrendered 419 yards of total offense Saturday night, falling to Nicholls State, 41-23, in Thibodaux, La. The loss drops SFA to 5-4 (.556) on the season and 0-3 in Southland Conference play.
The Colonels wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as Lavinco Brown returned the game's opening kick-off 95 yards for the touchdown to put Nicholls State up 7-0. After falling behind by two scores, the `Jacks' defense forced a fumble which Keldric Holman picked up and returned 54 yards for the score, cutting the lead to 14-7. But that would be as close as the Lumberjacks would get as SFA threw two interceptions and fumbled the ball twice which NSU turned into 21 points.
Sophomore running back Ron Middleton was a spark for the Lumberjacks. Middleton finished the night with 148 yards of total offense. Middleton rushed the ball 15 times for 73 yards and a score, and also caught five passes for 75 yards and one touchdown.
Senior Michael Williams was 19-of-30 for 217 yards and one touchdown through the air. He also carried the ball 10 times for 24 yards.
The Lumberjacks return to action Saturday Nov. 13, when they return home to face McNeese State. The game against the Cowboys is set to begin at 2:30 p.m., and will be televised by FOX Sports Net.
