`Jacks Stumble Against Texas State

SAN MARCOS - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team had its chances Saturday evening in San Marcos, but Texas State was able to hold on for a 17-14 victory over SFA. The `Jacks fall to 5-2 (.714) on the season and 0-1 in Southland Conference play.
After falling behind 7-0 in the first quarter, the Lumberjacks took the ball on their very next possession and marched it 73 yards on 12 plays for the touchdown. A two-yard pass from Michael Williams to tight end Matt Bodley capped off the drive. Williams finished the game 13-of-18 (.722) for 150 yards and one touchdown.
The Lumberjacks wasted little time as the defense stepped up to give SFA its first lead of the game. The `Jacks Keldrick Holman scooped up a Texas State fumble and carried it 12 yards into the end zone. The `Jacks defense held the lead the until late in the third quarter when the Bobcats scored a touchdown to go up 17-14 with 25 second remaining in third to give Texas State a 17-14 lead.
The `Jacks were hurt late in the contest by missed opportunities. SFA was penalized nine times for 81 yards, to go along with a fumble and a missed field goal late in the game. SFA also struggled to get a ground game going as they finished the night with only 24 yards rushing. Williams finished the night as the team's leading ground-gainer, carrying the ball seven times for 13 yards.
The 'Jacks were held to only 91 yards of offense in the second half and 228 yards of total offense for the game, the lowest output for an SFA team since the 'Jacks were held to 216 yards of offense a year ago against McNeese State.
Seven different `Jacks caught a pass Saturday night led by senior Miguel Toulon who caught seven passes for a game-high 119 yards. Junior Tony Tompkins hauled in four catches for 51 yards. Senior Braylon Lester led the Lumberjacks defensive effort recording 13 tackles, including one for a loss. Holman added eight tackles, recovered two fumbles and also forced a fumble.
The `Jacks return to action Saturday when they return home to face Sam Houston State on Homecoming. The game against the Bearkats is set to kickoff at 2 p.m., from Homer Bryce Stadium.
