
SFA Finishes Third At ULM-Fred Marx Invitational

MONROE, La.-- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team shot a final round 304 Tuesday, at the ULM-Fred Marx Invitational Golf Tournament, hosted by the University of Louisiana-Monroe to finish in third place. SFA held the lead by one shot heading into the final 18 holes play, but could not hang on to the team crown as Middle Tennessee State fired a final round 296 to win the two day event.
Middle Tennessee finished with a three round total of 889, seven strokes ahead of second place UL-Monroe and eight shots ahead of SFA.
Brian Grossman, a sophomore from Mansfield, won the individual title with a final round 74 to finish the 54-hole tournament at even par, 216. Grossman won by three shots over Chase Cooper of UL-Monroe. Grossman becomes the first Lumberjack since 1999 to win an individual tournament title. Lance Dunaway won the UT-Pan American Classic in November 1999.
Dustin Byrd, a junior from Fort Worth, finished in a tie for third with rounds of 73-69-79. J.P. Landry, a junior from Warren bounced back in the final round with a 75 to finish in a tie for 24th with rounds of 77-77-75. Spencer Hutton, a freshman transfer from Minnesota, shot rounds of 80-77-78 and Matt Burke shot 77-77-82 to round out things for the Lumberjacks.
SFA returns to action next week in Tulsa, taking part in the Oral Roberts Invitational at Lake of the Cherokees. The 'Jacks will also host the Southern Chrysler Dodge / Crown Classic Oct. 13 and 14 at Crown Colony Country Club, in Lufkin.
