
SFA Solid In Saturday Scrimmage

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack head football coach Mike Santiago said he saw good things from both sides of the ball in Saturday night's 100-play scrimmage at Homer Bryce Stadium. The 'Jacks came through the scrimmage with no new injuries.
"I was very pleased with the way things went tonight. I saw good things from both sides of the ball in every situation we worked. We saw explosiveness out of a number of players as well. I thought Michael Motte, Danny Southall and Paul Todd all looked really good tonight. Paul really had a nice scrimmage. We worked most of the reps with younger guys so we were able to see a number of these younger guys in different situations. Overall, I was very pleased with the way things went tonight," said Santiago.
Paul Todd led all receivers with five catches for 60 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown reception from Zeke Dixon early in the scrimmage. Dixon finished the night 11-22-0 passing for 99 yards and two touchdowns. He added a four yard touchdown pass to tight end Kevin Landry early in a goal line situation. Tony Tompkins had one catch for 13 yards and also recorded four carries for 33 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown run.
Early in the scrimmage, SFA worked on goal line situations with the offense scoring on three out of four possessions. Josh Grogan scored from four yards out and Justin Lanes also added a touchdown from the three yard line.
The SFA offense piled up 335 yards on the night with 126 yards coming on 52 rushing attempts. Four Lumberjack quarterbacks combined to pass for 209 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Michael Williams, Thomas Williams and Gary Allen were all held out of the scrimmage.
Ed Henson, a 6-2, 280 pound tackle from Hemphill was credited with nine tackles on the night as the defensive unit recorded six quarterback sacks. Kenneth Winters, Vernon Holman, Roderick Palmer, David Coleman and Montral Walker all had at least one sack on the night. Jamaal Cato and Freddie Evans each had an interception.
Braylon Lester had eight tackles with transfer linebacker Howard Boye-Doe and defensive back Roderick Palmer adding seven each. TeRai Lawason, Jeremy Davis and Kenneth Winters had six tackles each for the Lumberjacks.
