'Jacks Set To Scrimmage Saturday Night

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team went through a light workout Friday night under the lights at Homer Bryce Stadium in preparation for its first major scrimmage of fall camp, Saturday evening. The team will go through a 100-play scrimmage Saturday starting at approximately 7:00 p.m.
SFA went through a 60-play scrimmage on Tuesday afternoon that was dominated by the defense. Saturday's scrimmage will give coaches a chance to look at a number of players in game type situations.
Safeties Brent Hafford and David Crocker continue to be the anchors of the Lumberjack defensive unit as they held the SFA offense in check earlier this week. SFA head coach Mike Santiago and defensive coordinator Kim Dameron have been encouraged by the play of the defensive unit through the first full week of workouts.
Quarterbacks Michael Williams and Zeke Dixon have thrown the ball well early in camp and will have an opportunity Saturday night to work against what could be one of the top defensive units in the SLC this season. Dixon, a preseason all-SLC pick, has been named one of the top quarterbacks in the Southland Conference by several internet sites. He started the final four games of 2002. Williams has also played well so far in 2003 and gives Santiago a potent 1-2 punch under center.
SFA will open the season as the nation's 24th ranked I-AA football team. Saturday night's scrimmage is free to the public.
The Lumberjacks will open the season Sept. 6 against the Indians of the University of Louisiana-Monroe, in Monroe, La.
