
'Jacks Move Into Second Heading Into Final Round

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Two-time defending champion Lamar University cushioned its lead by five strokes at the 40th-annual Southland Conference men's golf championship at the Canebrake Golf Club in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Cardinals shot a 283 on day two after completing day one with a 286. Lamar's two-day total of 569 is one stroke over par with 18 holes left to play.
Stephen F. Austin moved from third place after day one into a second-place tie with Texas-San Antonio at 576. UTSA jumped all the way from seventh place with a tournament-best 279 on Tuesday. That followed a 297 over the first 18 holes for a total of 576, eight strokes over par. SFA carded a 287 after shooting 289 on Monday.
Freshman Brian Grossman continues to pace the 'Jacks after shooting rounds of 70-71, and enters Wednesday's final round in a tie for fourth place. J.P. Landry, a sophomore from Warren, shot an even par round of 71 Tuesday and is in a tie for eighth place. Trevor Sauntry, a sophomore from Missouri City shot rounds of 72-72, and is at two over par, 144, in a tie for 12th.
Two other freshmen, Josh Price of Marble Falls (75-73), and Justin Foust (75-78) are rounding out the scoring for the Lumberjacks. Price enters the final round in a tie for 24th, while Foust is tied for 42nd.
Two-time Southland player of the year Chris Stroud took over individual leadership from teammate Mark Van Hoose, last year's individual medalist, by shooting a tournament-low 65 on Tuesday at the par-71, 7,003-yard course. His six under on day two followed an even-par round on Monday for a total of 136.
Van Hoose falls to third with a one-over 72 on Tuesday and now stands at minus-two for the tournament. Duffy Pugh helped UTSA make its leap by shooting a 67 on day two after carding a 72 in the opening round. He is second among the 50 individuals with a three-under 139.
Play resumes on Wednesday with the final round scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m.
